Youth Inc Chat Upcoming Designer Sanjay Hingu Whose Experimental Menswear Wins Much Acclaim at Every Lakme Fashion Week

What inspired you to get into fashion?
I belong to a family which has been in the tailoring business for the last four decades, hence my roots are strong. My grooming started at a very early stage. My passion for fashionable clothes and the drive to carry the family tradition ahead inclined me to pursue designing professionally and continue with our tradition and carry the legacy forward.

Which designers are your role models for your work?
Tom Ford and Dolce and Gabbana fashion house are some designers I like to follow.

Tell us about your latest collection.
It’s trendy, edgy, very comfortable, and most importantly, wearable.

Describe your creations in 3 words.
Stylish, fashionable and wearable.

What is your philosophy on the art of fashion?
The end user has to feel comfortable in wearing the garment he/she has invested in. The clothes should also compliment the personality of the user and enhance his overall image.

What will be the hottest trend in men’s fashion in 2013?
Prints and solid dark colours will feature a lot. Traditional ethnic wear like bundgallas will also be seen on the ramp this season.

Quick Bytes

•    The celebrity you’d like to see wearing your designs: Daniel Craig
•    Your biggest wardrobe malfunction fear: Seeing an open stitch caused by mistake or by negligence
•    Colour of the season: Bold, dark colours
•    The most fashionable person in Bollywood right now: Arjun Rampal and Saif Ali Khan
•    Colourful suits for men – yay or nay? Yes, if you can flaunt it
•    Designers you’d love to work with: Paul Smith, Tom Ford
•    One fashion trend everyone must trash: Flared bottoms and ill-fitting clothes

What, according to you, is the biggest fashion faux pas?
Wearing clothes which don’t fit your personality or lifestyle. A good designer should do some research before styling for an individual.

Does your work reflect your personal fashion taste? Can you describe your style?
My personal styling is classic designs as they will always be in vogue.

What is the biggest challenge you face as a designer?
Unavailability or inaccessibility to European fabrics.

What are the five wardrobe essentials for collegians?
Denims, sneakers, pair of sunglasses, loafers, t-shirts, casual checked shirts and sling bags are a few must haves.

What advice do you have for young, aspiring designers?
Be sincere to your work and individuality.
