Egan Bernal, a 22-year-old is not just the first Columbian but also the youngest rider to have won the title of Tour de France winner in 110 years.

Tour de France is the world’s most renowned signature cycling race. This year, a total of 176 riders took to the road from the starting point from Brussels, Belgium, on 6th July, to the finish. With the motivation and spirits geared up by the Columbian fans, Bernal succeeded in crossing the line, hand in hand with his teammate Geraint Thomas, leaving him on the second position. Geraint Thomas too has been the victor of Tour de France 2018.

The 21st and final stage of this signature race took place in the Palais du Louvre, the Place de la Concorde and the Champs Élysées. Caleb Ewan, an Australian sprinter proved to be the fastest, winning the final stage on Champs Élysées.

Right after crossing the finish line, Egan Bernal fell in the arms of his family where he was welcomed with all hearts. When approached by the media, Egan, with the help of his translator stated that achieving such a massive victory in a race such as the Tour de France is unbelievable. He further added that he is currently the happiest person in the world. He also thanked his entire team for believing in him and providing him with immense support.

Although the whole of Columbia was celebrating the victory of its young enthusiastic rider, back in France, the French were having a bittersweet experience during the race. The reason being, in stage 19 and 21 of the race, Alaphilippe and Pinot (french riders) lost the chance of becoming France’s first winner since 1985.

Both the riders were dashed out from the race just two days prior to the finale which took place in Paris. The reason for this is said to be torrential rains and hail which disturbed Alaphilippe’s performance. It was quite unfortunate for the people of France to not have a winner from home.
