8 IELTS SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS BY THE BRITISH COUNCIL UP FOR GRABS

 

 

* The British Council is awarding eight scholarships worth Rs. 3,00,000 each through the IELTS (International English Language Test System).
* This scholarship will be towards the university tuition fee.
* In order to be eligible for the scholarship, you need to
• be a resident and citizen of India
• have taken the IELTS test with the British Council recently
• have at least a IELTS band score of 6.0
• have a valid offer letter or letter of acceptance from a recognised institution       that accepts the IELTS as part of its admission criteria
• Begin an under or postgraduate programme outside India in the 2014       academic year
* You may apply online by first downloading the application form, filling it and sending a scanned copy to ielts.scholarship@britishcouncil.org.
* The last date for sending applications is 30 June 2014.

JEE MAINS 2014 SCORES TO BE USED FOR UNDERGRADUATE ENGINEERING ADMISSIONS

* The separate CET that used to be conducted earlier in Maharashtra for first year undergraduate engineering admissions has been done away with and JEE Main’s Paper 1 marks are going to be used.
* The HSC marks will also be used in addition to the JEE Main’s marks for the year 2014.
* The JEE Main question paper is available in Hindi, English, Gujarati, Marathi and Urdu.

DEPARTMENT OF EARTH SCIENCES SET UP BY IIT KANPUR

* Department of Earth Sciences has been started by the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur on the recommendation of the Academic Senate on 5 February 2014.
* The course will focus on the study of the earth, its evolution and its internal dynamics along with a study on the human induced and natural metamorphosis of the telluric environment.
* Rajiv Sinha has been appointed the head of department for a period of 3 years.
* The department has PhD programmes in earth sciences for students.

PHD IN NANOSCIENCE LAUNCHED BY JNU

* The Special Centre for Nanoscience of the Jawaharlal Nehru University has launched a new PhD programme that specialises in the study of  nanoscience.
* The UGC-recognised PhD programme is beginning this year with only five seats.
* The course will consist of one year of classroom lectures followed by four to five years of comprehensive research.
* Candidates should have completed their MSc in biological, physical or material sciences and should have also cleared their CSIR-UGC NET/JRF examination.
* Applications are open until 26 March 2014.
* Medical, pharmaceutical and agricultural industries mainly require nanoscience experts. Though it is still coming up as a concept and career in India, it has scope for growth.

NEW FORMULA FOR GATE SCORES

* The 2014 GATE examination was organised by IIT Kharagpur and the scores are being calculated on the basis of the following formula: GATE Score= Sq+(St-Sq)[(MMq)/(Mt-Mq)], where M is marks achieved by the candidate Mq is the qualifying marks for a general category candidate Mt is the mean of marks of the  top 10 candidates who appeared the examination
Sq is 350
St is 900
* The GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) that was held from 1 February to the 2 of March was a series of computer based online tests.
* The results are scheduled to be out on the 28 March.
* The GATE scores are used widely as admission criteria for the Indian Institute of Technology, the Cochin University of Science and Technology, some institutes in Germany and Singapore and quite a few public sector companies.

BRITISH SCHOOLS ARE NOW OFFERING SCHOLARSHIPS WORTH Rs. 7 CRORE TO INDIAN STUDENTS

* A federation of leading boarding schools in the United Kingdom has been put together by the Anglo Schools International Services (ASIS) to offer seats to Indian students.
* Scholarships are being offered in the 25% to 100% range to interested and deserving Indian students.
* The ASIS has brought a change in the admission process and have created a common entrance test for all British schools for a common fee of £250.
* The test duration is 2 hours and can be taken until 31 March. The last date for registration is 21 March. The test is to be conducted at Pearson VUE test centres all over India.
