The establishment of two more All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), has been officially approved by the Union Cabinet. One will be constructed in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai and one in Telangana’s Bibinagar, costing Rs 1,264 crore and Rs 1,028 crore respectively.
Under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), the creation of the two new AIIMS at Tamil Nadu and Telangana will enhance advanced or tertiary healthcare and treatment in the regions. “Setting up of new AIIMS would not only transform health education and training but also address the shortfall of health care professionals in the region,” an official statement read.
The construction of new AIIMS will take a time period of 45 months to complete, broadly comprising a pre-construction phase of 10 months, a construction phase of 32 months and stabilization or commissioning phase of 3 months. The construction of both the AIIMS is being fully funded by the central government.
The new AIIMS will reportedly make was for 100 MBBs seats and 60 B.Sc nursing seats, with 15-20 super speciality departments. The new AIIMS will reportedly involve the creation of hospital, teaching block for medical and nursing courses, residential complex and allied facilities/services, broadly on the pattern of AIIMS, New Delhi, and other six new AIIMS taken up under Phase-I of PMSSY.
The hospital will have a capacity of 750 beds including emergency/trauma beds, AYUSH beds, private beds and ICU speciality and super speciality beds. In addition, there will be a medical college, AYUSH block, auditorium, night shelter, guest house, hostels, and residential facilities.
The official statement also said that these AIIMS will treat 1,500 patients per day. It will also provide super speciality health care, and doctors and other medicos, at primary and secondary level institutions and facilities being created under the National Health Mission (NHM).
