At some point in their lives, many people feel stuck or unfulfilled in the career path of their choice, and decide to transition into another career for the sake of better opportunities and perhaps a happier life. The reason could be something else too, but the point is, that these feelings are experienced by many in their lives. Are you someone who has similar feelings and wants a career transition? If so, then you should probably understand the consequences and risks that go along with this decision, while also understanding what you actually need to do during a career transition.
A career transition isn’t easy, it is a difficult task that perhaps requires months of planning and arrangements, in order to ensure a stable and smooth transition. Some people go through the most unsettling times of their lives during a career transition and this is because career pivots involve a lot of friction, disruption, and risk. Not only do you have to handle the professional and financial responsibilities, but you also have to take into account the emotional changes that you have to go through. So, here are a few things to take into consideration during a career pivot.
Identify The Right Time
The phrase, “When you know, you know.” is true, but it isn’t the only thing you can allow yourself to consider while making such a big decision. The right time comes into our minds when we get the gut feeling, but we also have to consider whether we’re really ready for a change that big. Make sure that you are financially stable enough to afford a transition, because it takes time to build from the ground up all over again. All aspects are to be considered, and there has to be a proper pros and cons analysis to understand whether or not it is the right time.
Do Your Research
Do you know enough about the field that you’re shifting to? Heavy research has to be done to perfectly analyze the risk of it and where the decision actually takes you. Before blindly jumping into something new, consider the why behind your actions; are you unhappy with your current job and find the work unsatisfying? Is it simply the people you work with that are making you want something new? Take some time to reflect on your skills and interests to identify the work that would be the most enjoyable and rewarding for you. The field that you wish to get into, is it worth the change?
Analyze The Practical Aspect
There is a lot of adjusting that one has to do during a career transition, so make sure you prepare yourself for it. There will be a period when you’re still settling in and this may lead to thoughts of doubt and skepticism. Trust your instincts. If after so much research and consideration you have made a decision, then make sure you give yourself enough time to settle into it. Don’t get discouraged through the job hunting process and try to let your passion show through. If all else fails, look for unpaid ways to get experience or expand your search to other similar industries. Soon you can join the ranks of employees in new and rewarding careers.
