‘5-year limit to correct student details’ – CBSE

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has allowed its students to apply for correction of name, date of birth and parents’ name within five years from date of declaration of their board examination results.

Until now, students had only a year’s time to apply for the necessary name, date of birth and parents’ name change. The new rule will be applicable to ongoing cases received by regional offices and headquarters of CBSE, as well as those cases pending in the courts.

The initial one-year time limit was fixed in 2015 as the board felt that students may take advantage of the system to create false identities via the name change, or to procure passports and other benefits. Before 2015 notification by the board, there was no time limit for the students, passing their class X or XII board examinations, to apply for issue of fresh certificates with corrected names and other details. During this period, the board saw students apply for corrections several years after they had passed out. Change in name, surname and other details of the students were allowed on the basis of an affidavit and a copy of a newspaper advertisement by the applicants.

In a notification issued on Friday, the CBSE said, “Limitation of cases of correction in candidate, mother and father name/correction in date of birth has been revised. Revised time limit will be 5 years from date of declaration of result and it will be applicable to all cases after class X/XII 2015 examination onwards”.
