Summertime Madness

All your friends are out of town and you’re stuck at home this vacation? Don’t sigh. Pearl Mathias brings you things you can do at home this holiday season to kill boredom

TAKE A WALK
The weather may be hot as hell during the day, but summer evenings are a lovely time to step out of the house and take in some fresh air. You may be lazy at first and not willing to step out of the house when you’re wrapped up in comfort and technology, but once you do, you’ll see how refreshing and invigorating it is. The breezy outdoors will freshen your mind and bring you home feeling much lighter. It’ll also help if you leave your phone at home.

EARN SOME BUCKS

If you’ve got plenty of free time on your hands, then this is a good opportunity to spend it earning some money rather than whiling it away. Research a few places that you would like to work and apply to them. It’s a chance to meet new people and also learn various new things at the workplace. Experience always helps. It may help you discover what you really want to do and what you don’t.

MEET NEW PEOPLE

It sucks when you’re friends are away and busy having a good time. But don’t let that be reason enough for you to not get out of your home and meet new peeps. I’m sure you’re contented with all the friends you have, but it doesn’t hurt to form new friendships. When you’re at the gym or dance class, strike a conversation with the person beside you and take it from there.

VOLUNTEER

Summer holidays are the best time to go out there and give off your time and talents to those who need it. You could volunteer at a local organisation that supports a cause that matters to you or choose from a variety of associations out there. Teach for India and related such organisations are more than willing to take in volunteers.

TRY SOMETHING NEW

If you’ve never cooked or baked before, this could be a nice time to experiment. On the same lines, if you’ve always wanted to go trekking or play a new sport, go for it.

TAKE UP A CLASS/HOBBY

If you’ve been considering learning some new moves or taking up yoga class, summer time is the best. There are tons of classes you could take up in your neighbourhood itself. Alternatively, you could also spend some time taking up hobbies that you haven’t had much time for.

SPEND TIME WITH OTHERS

Now that you have lots of free time, you can catch up with old school friends who you otherwise just text message. You can also visit family members and check up on them, it would bring them a lot of delight. If you know of any neighbours who live alone, you could stop by their place and just talk to them for a bit.

READ

Catch up on the new releases as well as classics that you’ve heard so much about. If you’re not so much of a reader, then catch up on movies that you’ve missed the past year. Look up lists of must read books and must watch movies and shows, something interesting might catch your interest.

LEARN A SKILL

Take up a computer class or sessions on personality development and public speaking. If there’s an area you feel you can work on and improve, then invest your time in it. These skills won’t take too long to master but they’ll surely take you a long way when you take up a job or otherwise.

DO NOTHING

It’s your holiday time. You’ve worked hard all year and now is your time to sit back and relax. Pamper yourself all you want. Go to bed late and stay tucked in till late noon. Keep all that you’re worried about (e.g. your results) aside and just spend this time on yourself and what you want to do. Even though there are a lot of things you will want to do, take some time out to do nothing as well.
