Decoding Your Intelligence

In an attempt to better understand a person’s personality and level of intelligence, Payal Mohta decodes the Dermatoglyphic Multiple Intelligence Test and its viability today

Ever sat in a class where everyone seems to understand what is going on except you? This is not because you are stupid, but because you have an intelligence that differs from those around you. Dermatoglyphics is the scientific study of fingerprints, and a test called Dermatoglyphic Multiple Intelligence Evaluation or Test (DMIE, DMIT) deciphers an individual’s unique intellect.

WHAT IS A DERMATOGLYPHICS MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCE (DMI)?
Dermatoglyphics involves an analysis of fingerprints. Derived from Greek words ‘derma’ meaning skin and ‘glyphe’ meaning carving, it originated in the late 1800s and has today transformed into one of the most sought after intelligence tests called Dermatoglyphics Multiple Intelligence or DMI. The reason why dermatoglyphics is so popular is because it can record a person’s intelligence, skills, talents and potential. This study of fingerprints has therefore gained widespread popularity across the board with school and college students and working professionals all looking to weigh the kind and level of intelligence that they were born with.

WHO IS A DMI TEST FOR?
DMI test is not limited to a specific age group; in fact, it can be taken by everyone from toddlers to students and even working professionals. Once taken the test might hold a different level of importance for each person. It is not only helpful to individuals but also to educational institutions to understand their students better; for corporate persons in the realm of employee recruitment and also for improvement of personal, day-to-day relationships.

WHY TAKE A DMI TEST?
* To understand one’s personality
* To personalise academic and extracurricular activities
* Discover strengths and limitations
* Make suitable academic and career choices

WHO IS IT FOR?
For students
* Identify a child’s traits and innate intelligence, which can be altered at this stage
* Implement suitable parenting and teaching methods and choose the right school for the child
* Identify with the aim to improve weak learning spots in a child
* Discover a child’s learning style and ability so as to choose suitable activities for them

For professionals
* Identify and develop core competencies
* Identify suitable learning and leadership styles
* Rekindle forgotten professional ambitions
* Invest in suitable self-development programmes

For recruiters
* Enables companies to select suitable candidates with the right abilities.
* Recognise an employee’s potential and maximise their efficiency
* Facilitate efficient communication
* Allow management to predominate human resource distribution
* Create an all-star work force

For better careers
* Subject and stream selection
* Reduces time, money and effort wasted over irrelevant classes
* Gives right teaching/parenting method for educational guidance

For educational institutes
* Understand students’ natural character traits, potentials and weaknesses
* Tailor-make students’ learning programme
* Make class divisions according to student learning sensitivity
* Assist students for effective communication with parents

For relationships
* To understand behavioural patterns, individual value systems and characteristics
* Develop understanding through bridging the gap of miscommunication
* To distribute micro and macro responsibilities

THE LIMITATIONS
* Dependency on these tests can prevent individuals from experimenting with career choices, jobs and relationships.
* The human mind is far too complex to be completely analysed through this or any scientific method.
* Fingerprints may be unalterable but through our experiences and interactions with people our intelligence may be subject to change.

HOW RELIABLE IS A DMI TEST?
Conventional personality evaluations such as aptitude tests often elicit emotional responses. On the other hand, in DMI, evaluations are based on fingerprints that are unalterable and cannot be influenced by environment, behaviour or emotions. Dermatoglyphics is a professional industry that combines neurobiology, genetics and embryology. Fingerprint patterns are not random. They are part of an individual’s genetic makeup. In ‘anencephaly,’ a disease where one is born without the brain, it is found that even fingerprints are missing. During the development of the foetus, finger prints and brain development take place simultaneously. Hence, it can clearly be said that the study of fingerprints are accurate and unchangeable.

“The future of India depends on brain mapping and the DMI test because our population is so vast. We know of only 6% of our intelligence, the other 94% is what brain mapping and IMI’s SW0T (strengths,weaknesses,   opportunities and threats) test tries to tap into.” – Veshal Shah, Chairman, IMI (Mumbai)
